EAT & GO OUT / Gastronomy

From classic tapas to avant-garde cuisine

To the west of the Cathedral and the City Hall, the Arenal neighborhood extends to the Guadalquivir River, a place full of history that has become a top enclave in Seville to enjoy gastronomy with capital letters..

Experiences for all palates

In Arenal there are all kinds of establishments, a formidable range of gastronomic experiences. If you are looking for traditional tapas you have an unbeatable representation of abacerías, freidurías, bars and restaurants. Unique places and very dear to the Sevillians as Trifón, Casa Moreno, Bodeguita Antonio Romero, Cervecería Internacional, Ventura, Bodega San José, Taquilla, La Taberna, Bar Alfonso «El Rey de los Caracoles»…. are interspersed with emblematic restaurants such as Becerra, Taberna del Alabardero, La Isla, Mesón 5J or Salas, among other bastions of Sevillian cuisine.

The Mercado del Arenal is another of the neighborhood’s nerve centers, a food market that combines typical retail stalls with establishments serving varied culinary proposals.

Arenal de Sevilla, port of America

That revolutionary phrase «Underneath the cobblestones is the beach»you could well use it when you walk along El Arenal on your gastronomic route. A way to remember what gave the neighborhood its name: the large sandy area that occupied one of the banks of the Guadalquivir, and where all kinds of industries and trades related to navigation were concentrated. This port area reached great splendor after the Discovery of America, to the point of becoming the most important port of the time.

A paradise for foodies

But in addition to the unmistakable tradition of this neighborhood so bullfighting (here is the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza), cofrade (the headquarters of the Baratillo, without going any further) and so linked to Seville overseas, El Arenal has experienced in recent years a wonderful gastronomic revolution. In its streets you will find a succession of new restaurants that stand out for their quality, for their surprising creations, for the renovation of the tapa at the height of travelers looking for unique experiences.
Haute cuisine in new formats makes its way in El Arenal. The density of these restaurants in the neighborhood is astonishing. Some names are already well known thanks to thousands of opinions from travelers and reports from food critics. There are, for example: Petit Comité, La Brunilda, María Luisa, Papirusa, Bartolomea, El Quinqué, El Puntal, Porta Rossa, La Azotea… A phenomenon that does not escape specialized guides such as Michelin’s Bib Gourmand, which has included in its list the restaurant Torres y García, from the creators of Ovejas Negras.

To keep in mind...

If you go to Bodeguita Antonio Romero ask for a piripi (it is an addictive montadito).

In the Bodeguita Romero (a different bar from the previous one) the star is the montadito de pringá. The Bodega San José is also a classic.

The ensaladilla in Seville is a marvel. The ones at Cervecería Internacional and Restaurante Becerra, just across the street, are delicious. Spectacular ensaladillas across the street from each other.

Come to Trifón (La Flor del Toranzo) and try the montadito de anchovies with condensed milk. You can’t imagine how good it is.
