The Guadalquivir

It is the only river in Spain with significant river traffic. Although it is currently only navigable from the sea to Seville, in Roman times it was navigable to Cordoba and in times of floods the ships could reach Andújar.

Short history of the river

Its high course begins at about one thousand three hundred and fifty meters above sea level, in the Sierra de Cazorla, where several streams converge intermittently in summer. Its source is in the Cañada de las Fuentes, in the municipality of Quesada. Before the river leaves from this, its source, the Guadalquivir receives water from the higher areas of the Sierras de Cazorla and the Pozo.

Sevilla, is the place where the Guadalquivir takes on greater importance and is that in order to facilitate river navigation to its mouth, its channel has been modified by the action of man building canals, locks and dredging its bottom. After crossing the towns of Coria and La Puebla del rio, is divided into several arms and semi-banana areas called the Marshes of the Guadalquivir, from where it goes to die to the Atlantic Ocean, near Sanlucar de Barrameda and always under the beautiful presence of the Doñana National Park.

The Guadalquivir is the most important river in Andalusia and one of the most important in Spain, but in Seville the Guadalquivir is more than just a river. It is the life and history of the city and is present in all its artistic manifestations.
