St. George's Castle

The Castle’s defensive importance diminished over the centuries and in 1481 it became the seat of the Spanish Inquisition, which abandoned it in 1626.

After this, it was ceded to the Count Duke of Olivares. In 1639 it would again belong to the Inquisition until its final departure in 1785. In the nineteenth century the castle was demolished to create a widening from the Plaza del Altozano to Castilla Street. In 1823 the Triana Market was installed on the site of the Castle, which has remained in operation to the present day. In 2009 the City Council of Seville inaugurated the Castillo de San Jorge project, creating an interpretation center of the ruins and the religious repression of the Spanish Inquisition. (In 1805 Beethoven premiered his opera Fidelio, about a Sevillian prison where prisoners of conscience existed at the end of the 18th century. Although not specifically mentioned in the text, it is very likely that the composer was referring to the Castillo de San Jorge).
