CULTURE, FIESTAS IN SEVILLE

Love is love: Seville unfurls in June with lots of Pride

Seville welcomes the month of June, the Month of Sexual Diversity, opening up to a curious visitor who becomes an inhabitant of the city, who explores a shared territory in equality, in which to enjoy its famous wealth of heritage and art, its immense monuments, the warmth of its climate and its people, premium accommodation in unique hotels, exclusive shopping in its emblematic shops, its rich and varied gastronomy, its crafts, its traditions and universal festivals, the warmth of its climate and its people, premium accommodation in unique hotels, exclusive shopping in its emblematic shops, its rich and varied gastronomy, its crafts, traditions and universal festivals, but also its commitment and its massive LGTBIQ+ Pride celebration.

Recognised pride

Already one of the city’s main tourist attractions, as an exponent of its openness, respect and solidarity, Seville Pride is one of the most important in Europe, and had its place in the LGTBI showcase at the last FITUR along with other important Pride events such as those in Ibiza, Madrid, Miami and Buenos Aires.

Between May and June, Seville City Council, in collaboration with LGTBI associations and groups, has designed an extensive programme of activities to celebrate Sexual Diversity Month, this year in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the birth, and the 40th anniversary of the death, of the performer, artist, painter and LGTBI rights activist José Pérez Ocaña.

A unique and diverse programme

Exhibitions, performing arts, music and cinema in different spaces make up the seventh edition of the FOC, Festival de Cultura con Orgullo, while the Alameda Festival, in the city’s most diverse neighbourhood, will offer concerts, parties, round tables, book presentations and talks as part of the Feria de Asociaciones (Associations Fair). The main events will be the Pride 2023 Proclamation by the singer Vanesa Martín on the evening of 22 June, and the great protest march through the city centre, organised by some thirty associations of the Federation of Andalusian Pride Organisations, on Saturday 24 June, in which around twenty floats and nearly 50,000 people take part every year.

June is full of culture

But June, in Seville, a city of contrasts and hidden virtues, is also the month of avant-garde culture in coexistence with tradition, where mild temperatures and warm nights invite you to enjoy an intense agenda of events of all kinds. You can soak up the new artistic trends on show at the Andalusian Contemporary Art Centre (CAAC), the exhibitions, this month dedicated to Comics or Egypt, at the Caixa Forum; or contemplate the paintings of masters such as Velázquez, Zurbarán or Murillo, at the Museum of Fine Arts.

The experience of culture takes on a new dimension when it is enjoyed in heritage settings. This is what happens with the exhibition of contemporary art Masters of the Future, open until the end of June in the Castle of San Jorge; in the concerts offered by the programme ‘Nights in the Alcazar Gardens’, from June to September, now in its 24th edition; in the musical events of the ‘Candlelight’ cycle in the Palace Houses of the Historical Centre; in the prestigious Itálica Dance Festival in the Roman theatre of Santiponce; or in the Plaza de España from 15th June with each of the concerts of the Icónica Sevilla Fest.
