Armillar Sphere

In the spring of 2007, several people, convened by the civil association Civiliter, developed a proposal with the intention of vindicating the epic of the first round-the-world voyage and the figure of Magellan, with a view to commemorating the 500th anniversary of this decisive event in the history of humanity.

The place where Magellan's expedition departed from

From this proposal was born the «Manifesto for the commemoration of the first circumnavigation of the Earth in its fifth centenary». The continuous adhesions to the manifesto lead to a citizen initiative that in 2009 gets the support of the City Council of Seville, which presents it to the world in Brazil during the forum of the Alliance of Civilizations of the UN in May 2010. In September of the same year, the program of events began with the installation of an armillary sphere in the place from where Magellan’s expedition departed, the mule dock in Seville. Replicas of this sphere will be placed in the coming months in many cities around the world.

 

Sevilla 2019-2022 is a major program of actions in various fields that aims to commemorate worldwide the V centenary of the First Circumnavigation of the Earth between September 2019 and September 2022.
