Curiosities

Did you know that the largest wooden structure in the world is in Seville?

In the heart of Seville, a bold modern structure towers over the Plaza de la Encarnación: Las Setas de Sevilla, officially known as Metropol Parasol. This impressive work of contemporary architecture not only redefines the Sevillian skyline, but also connects the city’s present-day life with its rich history. Opened in 2011, this wooden architectural marvel is the work of German architect Jürgen Mayer and has transformed a space that had been disused for decades, giving the city back a place to meet and enjoy.

A journey back in time: archaeological remains under Las Setas

One of the most fascinating curiosities of Las Setas is its direct connection to Seville’s ancient past. During construction, archaeological remains dating from the 1st to the 6th century were discovered, including Roman mosaics and traces of the Islamic period. These findings were integrated into the Antiquarium, an underground museum that allows visitors to travel back in time and explore the city’s roots. Thus, beneath the futuristic wooden structure lies an archaeological treasure trove that reminds us of Seville’s infinite wealth of history.

The world's largest wooden structure

Another striking aspect of Las Setas de Sevilla is its innovative construction. With its 3,500 pieces of Finnish spruce glulam, it stands as the largest wooden structure in the world. This choice of material not only offers a unique aesthetic design, but also promotes sustainability. The timber used is a renewable resource, and the structure has been designed to minimise environmental impact. This commitment to sustainability is a reflection of the passion for innovation and preserving the environment that characterises Seville.

An unrivalled viewpoint

One cannot talk about Las Setas without mentioning its spectacular viewpoint. At a height of 28.5 metres, it offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Seville that is incomparable. This viewpoint has become a meeting point for locals and visitors alike, a place to enjoy the sunsets and feel the vibrant energy of Seville from above.

The Setas de Sevilla are much more than a modern structure; they are a symbol of the fusion between past and present, between innovation and tradition. This impressive monument is a testament to the spirit of Seville, always looking for new ways to enjoy and celebrate its history.
