Holy Week in the Neighborhoods
From the Friday of Sorrows, numerous Sevillian neighborhoods are brimming with activity and festive atmosphere. Each one has its own brotherhood and deep-rooted traditions that are passed down from generation to generation.
From Triana to Macarena, neighbors join together to carefully prepare the processions that wind through their narrow, picturesque streets, adorning balconies with makeshift altars of flowers and candles. In addition, the tapas bars offer their Lenten culinary specialties.
These are our recommendations to live a different Holy Week, far from the more official one that runs through the historic center, an authentic and moving experience that deserves to be lived and celebrated in all its greatness.
Friday of Sorrows
La misión (Heliopolis). Its passage through the streets of the neighborhood among the orange trees in bloom, is full of beauty and depth. As a curiosity we tell you that the signature of the author of the image of the Holy Christ of the Mission is carved on a lizard that is located on a rock that holds the right foot of the Lord.
Pino Montano. The beginnings of the corporation date back to 1892 when a professor of pretechnology of the school Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente made some small images in glued and polychrome paper.
Bellavista. Its passage through Guadalajara Street is one of the most emotional moments of the procession.
Bendición y Esperanza (Polígono Sur). In his visit to the parish of La Oliva has chairs for the elderly and people with functional diversity who wish to wait for the arrival of the Mystery.
Saturday of Passion
Torreblanca. It is the brotherhood of vespers considered as «dean», being the first brotherhood erected by the Archbishopric in a suburb that did not perform penitential station to the Cathedral of Seville.
Divino Perdón (Alcosa Park). It is followed in a multitudinous way by its neighbors and exciting moments are lived around the parish of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados.
La Milagrosa ( Ciudad Jardín). It highlights the spectacular parade of the Jewish Guard, especially attractive for children.
Palm Sunday
La Paz (El Porvenir). This is the first brotherhood of Palm Sunday that puts the cross of guide in the street. The Virgin carries in her right hand a handkerchief and in her left hand a silver olive branch, symbol of her invocation, “la paz”.
La Hiniesta ( San Julian). It is worth seeing it, after leaving, through the streets leading to the Plaza del Pumarejo and on the way back, from San Marcos to San Julian.
La Estrella (Triana). This brotherhood is known as La Valiente for being the only brotherhood in Seville to fulfill the penitential station on Holy Thursday 1932, during the Republic, despite the existing religious persecution.
Easter Monday
El polígono de San Pablo (San Pablo). The two titular images of the brotherhood have green eyes. The mystery has carved on the vents the 100 of the Centenary of Sevilla FC.
Santa Genoveva (Tiro de Línea). It is worth contemplating the large number of women who are walking behind the step of the Lord and the Virgin. In one of the master poles of the canopy is the shield of Real Betis Balompié.
San Gonzalo (Triana). It is the brotherhood of Easter Monday and the trianeras with the longest procession of nazarenes of all the brotherhoods.
Holy Tuesday
El Cerro (El Cerro del Aguila). The Brotherhood is in the street more than 14 hours and is the only brotherhood that plays the hymn of Andalusia at the exit instead of Spain.
San Benito (La Calzada). The Virgin of the Incarnation is known as the «Palomita de Triana», due to the fact that this Virgin processed in a canopy with a silver dove on its canopy roof, at the time when the corporation had its headquarters in Triana.
Holy Wednesday
San Bernardo. It is one of the historical brotherhoods of the neighborhood and linked to important figures of bullfighting. The characteristic curled sails of its canopy stand out.
La Sed ( Nervión). María Santísima de Consolación is the only virgin with blue eyes of all the Sevillian Holy Week.
Holy Thursday
Las Cigarreras (Los Remedios). Its popular name is due to its historical links with the Tobacco Factory. In this brotherhood are the only Romans of Holy Week who wear black feathers on their helmets.
Montesión (Feria Street). The paso de palio has very characteristic elements such as the rosaries hanging from the beams and the gathered tail of the cloak.
"Madrugá"
Esperanza de Triana (Triana). It was founded in 1418 by members of the guild of potters and is the only brotherhood that makes penitential station in two churches: the Cathedral and Santa Ana.
Esperanza Macarena (Macarena). The Virgin has five curious green stones set in the shape of lilies, called mariquillas, which pierce her chest. They were a gift from the Sevillian bullfighter Joselito el Gallo, for whom she was dressed in mourning in 1920.
Good Friday
El Cachorro (Triana). Legend has it that the face is inspired by a gypsy nicknamed «El Cachorro» who was dying after being stabbed.
La O (Triana). The tortoiseshell and silver cross of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno is a real jewel of the 18th century and its paso de paso is one of the largest in Seville, with seven workers.
Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday
La Trinidad. Of the three pasos that procession in the brotherhood, one is allegorical (The Sacred Secret) and represents God’s decision to send his son to earth to sacrifice himself for us.
El Sun (Plantinar). It is the only canopy of the Sevillian Holy Week that has three images.
La resurrección (San Luis). The Virgin, not being a «dolorosa», does not wear tears.
