How to survive a ‘bulla’

Holy Week in Seville is an incomparable experience, but it also brings with it the crowds that gather in the streets to watch the processions, the so-called «bullas». And these can be overwhelming for many people. That’s why we give you some tips on how to manage them naturally and not be afraid of them, as they are an inevitable part of the street party.

First of all, it is important to plan in advance what you want to see. It is impossible to see everything, so get a good programme and research the procession routes. Choose strategic locations where you can get a good view without being too crowded in the crowd.

If you have to cross the official procession, use the designated crossings in the direction you are heading. You should avoid at all costs crossing in the middle of a procession or interrupting the procession of the Nazarenes. In addition to inconveniencing those who have been waiting for hours, you could unintentionally cause a Nazarene to fall.

Useful tips: hydration and comfort

The warm weather that often accompanies this time of year means you should carry a bottle of water and some light food, such as fresh fruit, cereal bars or snacks, to keep you hydrated and energised throughout the day, especially if you’re surrounded by people.

Another key tip is to dress appropriately. Opt for comfortable, cool clothing that allows you to move easily through the crowd. Also, don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun with hats or caps and apply sunscreen to avoid sunburn.

Keep a positive and patient attitude. The important thing is not to get overwhelmed. Be prepared to move or let others pass. If someone asks you to let them pass, do so if you can, and apologise if you cannot.

If you find yourself caught in a sudden «bustle», don’t panic! Stand still in a doorway or corner where you feel comfortable and wait for the crowd to pass. In a few minutes, everything will be back to normal and you can continue to enjoy Lent and Holy Week.

With these tips, you will be prepared to survive the «bullas» of Holy Week – make the most of this special celebration!
